Basic Curriculum

In Religion, students are introduced to the Church’s faith and come to an awareness of God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The life of Jesus, the work of the Holy Spirit, and the life of prayer are explored. Students are acquainted with Mary, the angels and the saints.

The first-grade language arts program incorporates the receptive language arts and the expressive language arts. Integration of listening, speaking, reading and writing activities occurs daily. Students develop listening skills, use strategies of phonics to decode words and increase vocabulary, apply grammatical rules when writing and use reading strategies to read with fluency and expression.

The first-grade math curriculum builds on those skills introduced in kindergarten. Students count, sort and compare sets of objects; recognize and describe patterns; add and subtract one- and two-digit numbers; draw, sort and describe two- and three-dimensional figures; use nonstandard and standard units to measure; organize and interpret data; and recognize fractions.

In Social Studies, students explore neighborhoods and communities; develop map skills; study the lives of important American leaders; and learn about history through the study of holidays. In Science, students learn with a hands-on approach with LabLearner.  They discover our five senses; staying safe at school, at home, on the move, outside, and all the time; the properties of solids and liquids; characteristics of living and non-living objects; identify and describe the basic needs and structures of plants and animals; explore weather, discover precipitation, wind, and natural selection. In Health, students identify the basic characteristics and needs of the human body; learn about promoting good personal health skills and contributing to a healthy environment.

School Supplies

The first grade supply list is available by clicking on the "School Supplies" link. Pre-ordered Sprout school supplies may be picked up at Meet the Teacher day.

The following additional items need to be purchased separately: art smock, Fiskars scissors, clear contact paper,headphones and a backpack (not rolling). Teachers will provide instructions about labeling supplies and bringing supplies to school.  


Room parents will be in contact with each family regarding volunteering in the classroom, in computer class and in the library. Room parents will also coordinate with the PTO regarding school-wide activities. Thank you, in advance for getting involved! 

Diocesan Policy for the protection of children requires all parents wishing to volunteer for their students’ classes, activities and field trips be VIRTUS certified.  For more information on how to become VIRTUS certified, please click on the "VIRTUS" link.

According to the Diocesan Policy, all volunteers are required to submit the necessary Diocesan paperwork prior to volunteering. Paperwork should be processed and “cleared” before anyone can begin his/her service in the School. If you are not compliant, parents will not be allowed into the school to interact with children in the classroom, cafeteria, playground, field trips, field day, parties, coaching, special classes, science fair, etc.  


School Policies and Protocols

Please pack a nutritious snack and lunch for your child each day. Hot lunches are available in the cafeteria on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Click on the "Hot Lunch" link for more information about preordering milk and preordering hot lunch.

Depending on allergies in your child’s classroom, special attention may be required as to food permitted during snack time.



Please check the contents of your child’s blue folder each evening. If you have paperwork for the teacher or the school office, please send it to school in your child’s blue folder. You may correspond with your child’s teacher through email or a note in your child’s blue folder. STS uses email as its primary means of communication.  STS also utilizes the school website and the weekly newsletter emails.  Emergency and last minute announcements may occur via our school messaging system.  Please make sure you check your email account daily to get the latest news and information.  Updates to email address, home address, phone number, etc. can be made using Family Information Update form here.



St. Theresa students will have P.E. once a week.  They are required to wear their P.E. uniform for the entire day on P.E. days, including sneakers.  Notifications for spirit wear days and dress-out days are noted on the school calendar and noted in the weekly newsletters.  Please click on the "Uniforms" link to review the school uniform requirements.  There is also a used uniform sale in the spring.
